From a historical perspective it was always a kind of time taking work to find informations about OpenSource projects…
A new platform calles Ohloh tries to fill that gap: The project gives everyone the chance to submit new projects, no matter whether you’re a developer or “just” a user of an application.

The platform is analyzing the sourcecode of a project by accessing its versioning system like cvs, subversion, git on a regular basis. Depending on those informations the platform is forming a rating about the activity of the project as well as about the amount of developers contributing on it.

You have even the chance to compare different project, unfortunately only the informations gathered from the version control system are considered.
